A question for moms out there ( i now know that I have a blog-stocker or two…and i love it because i stalk other people’s blogs all the time!!!….so if you have input don’t be shy…..i’d love to hear it! )

Greg and I are starting to think about baby proofing our home but we don’t know where to start. Looking at all the products out there we can tell that just like anything baby you can go totally overboard if you want to. We don’t want to do that…and we do believe in discipline and teaching “don’t touch”, but we also don’t want to be the people on the 5 o’clock news who say “we just turned our back for a second and….” So if anyone has any input on things that they think are absolute musts….or things that people don’t usually think about…or things that are just a time/money suck please let me know.

I know that a lot of this will just have to wait to see what Fiona decides to get into. She may never try to get into the toilet…or she may decide to flush every detached item from our home down it….we won’t know until the time comes…but a little upfront preparedness would be good.

I can tell you that she is ENERGETIC….the girl can not sit still for a minute….I was thinking today as I held her and she squirmed and looked and sat and stood and twisted and turned that we don’t need a nanny for this girl…we need to find a handler for her!

    haha a handler.. that’s good!

My advice is to create a ’safe’ area for Fi. We have our whole living room/dining/entry set up as a safe space for them. I originally was going to teach ‘don’t touch’, but for my sanity I put things away. I don’t want to spend my day chasing the kids around telling them to ‘not touch’.. plus should you need to pee you can leave her in her safe zone.

Plug covers, gates and cord management are key in our house. We didn’t baby proof the kitchen.. babies don’t go in there. And the game will change when they are older and able to open doors… one step at a time. :)

Hi…I’m one of your stalkers…but I’m a friend of Laura’s..so I’m not that creepy. I agree with Laura…plug covers were pretty much the only thing we spent $ on…and a nice looking gate for the stairs…
Anyway…just thought I’d introduce myself (-: I went to high school with Laura. I love reading your blog (-: Not to give any advice…but my sister in law had to use a straw to get her daughter to realize that milk could come from somewhere else than the boob….it was a long process…but it worked..she then went to the green bottle things…can’t remember what they’re called..but she already used …oh soothies…the pacifier and then the bottle worked…but you’re doing great…Fiona is gorgeous (-: You don’t have to post this…I just thought I’d say hi (-:

    Hi,
We went for the plug covers, gates, latch for under the sink cabinet (all the cleaning supplies), corner covers (for the sharp corners of the coffee table), and that was about it. I put breakables away (less to dust!) and made sure that everything in the drawers that she could reach was OK for her. Then I let her have at it! Some parents get the toilet lock, etc, but we didn’t bother. guess after we did all the above, we just waited to see where she went, and got anything out of there that we missed. When she went for cords, etc, we’d say “back it up, sister” to avoid saying “no” all the time. But we did say “no” when necessary. Have fun!
